A peaceful protest in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State took a violent turn when a policeman allegedly shot and injured an unarmed protester on the second day of the demonstration.

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were blocked by police at the Otovwodo axis of the East-West road, and despite being unarmed, the police fired tear gas and live bullets, hitting one protester in the chest.

The shooting sparked outrage among the protesters, who responded by burning tyres and pelting local government officials with sachet water.

Human Rights Activist, Comrade Silver, who was present at the scene, described the incident as “unprovoked” and “excessive use of force” by the police.

The injured protester was rushed to a hospital by soldiers, and his condition remains unknown.

The protest, which began peacefully, was marred by police brutality, intimidation and harassment.

However, the incident has raised concerns about police brutality and the use of excessive force against unarmed protesters.
