By Stephen Asaba-ase
The Governor of Bayelsa State has urged Media Practioners to protect and maintain integrity in their profession in building lasting trust with the public and solidify the foundations of our nascent democracy.
The Governor also emphasised that the press is the fourth estate of the realm and more critical in serving as a beacon of hope in promoting unity in the Country
He stressed this been the host of the forthcoming three-day 20th All Nigerian Editors Conference, ANEC, 2024 holding at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
“The theme of the conference: “Economic Growth and Development Strategies in Resource-Rich Country,”
“The Nigerian Citizens are in a crucial time in the journey to a sustainable development.
However, he also noted that Nigeria is swimming in abundant resources, but poverty and underdevelopment continuous to grow strength across the Country, adding that, a situation he described as paradoxical.
“Bayelsa State, one of the major contributor to Nigeria’s oil and gas production are bedevilled with a severe environmental degradation and economic malnutrition.
“As Publishers, editors and journalist in our society, you are charged with the responsibility to shine a light on these injustices in the Nation.
“Therefore, we urged you as editors and influential voices to advocate for policies that are imperative on the sustainable development and community empowerment.
“The discussions are not just abstract concepts. They directly affect people’s lives, most importantly areas have suffered from resource exploitation, environmental harm, and unequal political and economic power distribution.” he added
