Students cry out over unlawful torture by Cadet Corps of federal poly in Ado-Ekiti

The Federal Polytechnic Cadet Corps members in Ado-Ekiti have been accused of incessant harassment, intimidation and humiliation of students in the school.

In a petition titled, “SAVE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO STUDENTS FROM INCESSANT HARASSMENT BY THE CADET CORPS” said, students were beaten at will by the Corps members.

According to the petition, one Comrade Omotosho Joel, the President of the Association of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Students (ASEEES) who despite being sick was beaten beyond recognition on the 4th of April, 2023 because he was found in the ladies dormitory at an odd hour.

The statement reads, “Assault and molestation of Students of the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Èkìtì by officers of the Cadet Corps has become a recurring theme on the campus. This insolent act has stigmatised a lot of right thinking and law abiding students of the institution who have been battered for minute or totally non-existent issues as in the case of Comrade Omotosho Joel, the President of the Association of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Students (ASEEES) who despite being sick was beaten beyond recognition on 4th of April, 2023 because he was found in the ladies dormitory at an odd hour”, the report added

The students narrated that the incident had threatened the peace of the institution, causing uproar among students.

“This has caused massive unrest and sometimes melee on campus hence is a major threat the peace being promoted by the administration of the institution through the security office.

The statement called for stiff punishment for erring corps members to serve as deterrent to others indulging in similar crimes.

“This sort of gross misconduct by the Cadet corps has besieged the institution for a while now hence the need to cleanse the Corps and by extension, the perpetrators of this indecent act should be dealt with according to the full force of the law as provided in subsection I and x, section 34.1 of the students information handbook 2016 edition that fighting shall be punished by either reprimand or suspension for two semesters or expulsion depending on the gravity of the brawl and “use of threat or violence of any kind on anybody which is punishable by reprimand or rustication for a maximum of two semesters”, the petition added.
